When it comes to Samba Masala, you hear the band before you actually see them.
Since its inception in 2004, Singapore Management University's (SMU) percussion band, Samba Masala, has grown tremendously in skill, size and versatility. Once a humble dhol percussion band consisting of small numbers, the 89-man samba band has grown by leaps and bounds to become one of the few leading local Samba Bands iwth authentic Brazilian instruments.
Under the guidance of Budi from locally renowned percussion band Wicked Aura Batucada, Samba Masala has been thrilling and impressing audiences in numerous continents over the years. The name 'Samba Masala' is now incongruous with a band with overfilling enthusiasm and energetic stage performances and a passion for all things percussion.
Samba Masala's Blend of dynamic beats and vibrant stage performances has bought it to the pinnacle of performing arts. Whether you prefer pulsating rhythms or smooth and sexy Latin grooves, SMU's fusion Asian/Brazilian percussion band is sure to get your moving with its inimitable music, unparalleled style and sheer showmanship.
Over the years, Samba Masala has travelled the world to spread their love for the music. They have made their mark in London, Ireland and most recently in 2010, Coburg, Germany where the band made their first appearance at the international annual Coburg Samba Festival. Local appetites for such music have also been satisfied, with Samba Masala Hosting their own concert, Content10n, in 2010. This pioneer project saw Samba Masala collaborating with various local vocalists and musicians with the use of flutes, and electric bass and even a synthesizer to jazz up the entire night.
