Surdo Section

Surdo Section

Surdos are the heartbeat of the band. With their deep bass sounds, surdos are used to keep time and provide a steady beat that acts as a foundation for the accompanying rhythms. There are three kinds of surdos: first (marcação , or marker) , second (resposta , or response) , and third (cortador, or cutting). Together these three parts create a distinctive pattern which propels and drives the samba.

Christy

Tan Chen Lin, Christiana
Cortador

Voted most likely to be married to her instrument
Through months of sweating it out with her cortador, Christiana's body has formed great and irreversible bonds with her surdo... in the forms of bruises, cuts, scars and mutant bones. Not only has she sacrificed a promising modeling career, she fears that life would be meaningless without her beloved bass drum. Watch her kick ass in Samba Masala before she gets sold off to the circus.

Crystal

Crystal Wong
Cortador

Voted most likely to be the "thorn amongst the roses".
Crystal, a level 1 surdo player, is the only girl in her batch of surdo players. Despite being small, she is as able to whack the surdos as the guys would. She has been known to move very vigourously with the surdos, sustaining numerous injuries and even holes in four shirts so far. However, this will never stop her from grooving to the Samba beat!

Cortador/Marcação

Voted most likely to be rejected as a face painter.
Since its introduction in Samba Masala's performances, the allure of face painting has never ceased to fascinate Liang Jian. In spite of his obvious passion (and not inconsiderable skill), he faces constant ridicule and rejection when he attempts to use fellow band members as canvasses for his art. Heartbreaking as that may be, Liang Jian vows never to let that get in the way of his quest for face painting perfection.
